Virtual Hackathon: Designers needed to give the Government online channels a facelift

SmartBots calls on capable citizen designers to form teams of three to five (3-5) people to participate in a virtual hackathon to design the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) for government online channels. This will be the second hackathon within six months by SmartBots reaching out to citizens to develop the UI and UX for Botswana’s online service channels as part of the digital transformation strategy implementation.

For the upcoming hackathon, teams will be required to consider the User Experience of the Government’s current online service channels and provide fresh ideas and recommendations on how to make them more attractive, user friendly and allow for seamless interaction in a bid to accelerate uptake of digital services.

In February, the Government of Botswana launched eight (8) online services that have been deployed through the online portal and mobile app. These service channels are part of the first phase of movingtowards seamless service delivery through digital channels. As progress is made towards provision of end to-end delivery of these 8 services, it is an opportune time to revamp the customer interaction and experience across all Government channels.

The winning team will pocket P70,000 (Seventy thousand Pula only) while the first and second runner ups will receive prizes of P20,000 (Twenty thousand Pula only) and P10,000 (Ten thousand Pula only) respectively. Interested teams are to register online at https://skillsranker.bih.co.bw in order to participate in the four (4) days hackathon. Registration will run from 28 June 2021 to 3 July 2021. The design virtual hackathon will take place from the 5th to 8th July 2021 and winners will be announced on the 13th July 2021.

About SmartBots
The Government of Botswana has approved and adopted the Fourth Industrial Revolution Digital Transformation Strategy (SmartBots) to gain a strong position within Africa and the world as a “Smart Society,” with broader use of technology expected to grow exponentially in the coming years. This will lead to multiple benefits for Botswana, e.g., increased business opportunities and hence trade for the private sector, optimised service delivery by the Government and its various institutions and the realisation of an effective governance model that uses technology to engage and better serve citizens’ needs, all leading to an improved quality of life for Batswana.

To achieve this, Botswana needs to develop a new proposition to drive transformation across the economy, government and society. SmartBots is an action plan that delivers a smart sustainable society for Botswana and Batswana. SmartBots adopts a whole of government approach to transform the public sector to efficiently provide services to citizens and businesses, reform the education with a focus on building the human capital towards a knowledge-based economy and effectively monitor and evaluate programmes and projects through a digital dashboard to ensure the attainment of the national visions and improved citizen satisfaction. SmartBots engages the private sector in successfully implementing the SmartBots priorities and initiatives.
