BOTSWANA’S LOCALLY MANUFACTURED PADS

Locally produced sanitary pads hit Botswana's market

A business idea conceptualised during the CEDA University challenge has shaped into an operational enterprise, with products hitting the market and well received by consumers.

Botscrest Holdings, a manufacturing company established by University of Botswana Mechanical Engineering graduate, Gogontle Basiami, is producing sanitary pads under the name Bloom Sanitary Pads from its plant in Selibe Phikwe, making it the first functional sanitary pads manufacturing operation in Botswana.

The plant, which was set up at a cost of P2.6 million with the backing of CEDA has the capacity to produce 300 pieces per minute, 120 000 on an 8-hour shift, making 12 000 sanitary pads packs per day at full peak, 1 pack is made by 10 pieces.

Speaking to The Projects Magazine this week, Bloom Sanitary Pads Founder & Botscrest Managing Director Mr Gogontle Basiami said the product is already on the shelves in select Knock-Out and Saverite stores countrywide, adding that listing on other retail outlets is on the cards.

“Our products are very affordable and competitive when compared to other existing brands and the aim is to make sanitary pads affordable to ordinary Batswana as much as possible,” he said.
