COUNTESS OF WESSEX RECEIVES PRAISE

Countess of Wessex and Forfar, Sophie, has received praise for supporting Botswana’s aim to promote the Pono Yame programme.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Lemogang Kwape mentioned during the dinner in honour of Countess of Wessex Sophie that the programme was mainly focused on the eye health of school going children. He went on to mention that the programme focuses on conducting eye screening for student and also availing glasses to those who will be in need of them.

Dr Kwape applauded the Countess of Wessex for touching the lives of many through her charity work, and her recent trip to the DRC on a campaign against sexual violence during conflict.

“I commend you for being consistent in your commitment to support people with disabilities, eradication of avoidable blindness, especially among children in developing countries and in assisting victims of sexual violence during conflicts,” he said.

The Countess of Wessex, who is on Africa tour that includes Botswana, had an opportunity to visit Molefe Primary School in Kopong to learn more about the Pono Yame school eye health programme. She also paid heed to the courtesy call to President Dr. Masisi where they discusses issues related to education and health.

Minister Kwape conveyed condolences on the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II, in the statement he mentioned that the Queen’s passing was not a loss only to the United Kingdom but to Botswana and the Commonwealth states. He extended congratulatory wishes to King Charles III on his ascension to the throne.
