BOTSWANA’S FIRST CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION PROGRAMME

Botswana has executed its first climate change and adapting projects with European Union assistance in Lobatse.

A trained total of 30 beneficiaries on such operation projects are funded by the EU to the tune of 225 000 Euros which is approximately P2.9million.

The council’s principal physical planner, Ms Gaokgakala Sobatha said the beneficiaries were selected on the basis of their poor economic status as the aim was to uplift their lives as they will be able to generate electricity for themselves.

The EU head of cooperation for Botswana and SADC, Mr Clement Boutillier praised the council for showing commitment towards executing the climate change mitigation programme which was supposed to be started in 2020 but was set back because of COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Simon Rantshese A technical expert and Construction Industry Trust Fund lecturer said that materials needed for biogas generation were easy to source since it was any bio-degradable waste such a human and cattle waste which have high levels of biogas.

“The gas is flammable and can cause fire if not handled with care,” warned Mr Rantshese.
