Businesses Owned By President Mokgweetsi Masisi

Businesses owned by President Mokgweetsi Masisi. His excellency may be the 5th president of the country but is also a business man on a mission to grow his empire so much he has been under scrutiny for some of his dealings. In 2020 Masisi had business interests in approximately 10 companies but his business ventures have multiplied since then. His business interests are as controversial as his net worth which has been cited between $2million and $20million by various sources (BWP20million- 200million plus).

Masisi is a co-shareholder in Choppies which is owned by Ramachandra Ottapathu. He was the winner for the tender leased for Banyana Farms and he also owns shares in Arcee (PTY)Ltd to mention a few. These shares caused a lot of commotion as they (10%) came from Ottapathu. Masisi is also an agri-prenuer involved in commercial livestock production and horticulture at Matseta near Gaborone where he grows vegetables and rears cattle and small stock. He further owns and manages a feedlot in Moshupa and farms at Tshele and Morupule. Additionally the President’s family inherited a farm at Sekoma and operates a commercial livestock production.

According to a collection of sources Choppies is a beneficiary of government business; and a major supplier of groceries to the Botswana Defence Force, the prisons department and other government departments. Moreover, Arcee is in direct business partnership with Choppies raking in millions annually. Arcee profited over P10million in 2018 alone from their main client Choppies and possibly tripled returns post the pandemic. The company further registered six subsidiaries during the pandemic, which have raised eyebrows on the idea that they are all meant to benefit directly from the ongoing pandemic. The list includes a wide range of health and hygiene related companies: Klenzol, Feather Glow, Silky Fresh, Detox+, and Rinze. These were allegedly brought on board just three days before his excellency imposed the state of emergency on Botswana.
